Breakfast is perhaps one of the most versatile meals-- nearly anything goes. Sweet, savory, light, heavy, baked, fried, grilled: you can get away with just about anything. And this is why breakfast is my favorite meal.
Now, at some point in the future I'll share my mother's (and consequently my Grandmother's) Chocolate Gravy recipe (Hill Folk know good food), but for now I thought I'd pass along my thoughts on a bakery we visited while in Fayettenam this weekend for the Razorback Implosion.
Rick's Bakery is situated in a pretty good location just off College Street north of UofA campus. I know a lot of North Westerner's will know the history of the bakery better than I, so I'll just stick to what I do best: eating. On our last excursion to Fayetteville, we were introduced to the the Bacon Maple Donut. Read that slowly and carefully one more time. Bacon. Maple. Donut.
I expectantly approached the counter in a line of 40 people (no lie, it was game day, the line was out the front door and into the parking lot). "Do you have any Bacon Maple Donuts?" I asked. "No, we don't today," responded the baker. I was dejected. "But I could make you one!" he offered enthusiastically, and my hopes were lifted. It was everything I expected.
Bacon Maple Donut/Log |
Sweet Maple flavor. Salty, smokey bacon. Soft, smooth doughy goodness. That's how you end up describing this creation, and the words don't do it justice.
Menu: ★★★★☆
Creative, delicious pastries with Razorback flair to top everything off. Excellent Coffee selection, and they can custom make to your heart's desire. Limited only because they're a bakery.
Food: ★★★★☆
Everything I tried was really, really good. Nothing overly complex, nothing overly pretentious, but everything of the highest quality. Coffee is delicious and hot.
Atmosphere: ★★★☆☆
Atmosphere is cafe, with a little shopping on the side, which gives it a slightly less personal feel. But it's a donut shop, so really, what do you expect?
Service: ★★★★★
They're pretty quick and efficient, and really went out of their way to make a custom order for a single patron in the midst of getting overrun with customers. That spoke volumes to me.
