Hunt's Oyster Bar (Panama City, FL)

It has been too long, I feel, since I was able to share a food experience here. Life is certainly a whirlwind, and this spring has been no exception.

I'd like to take a moment to share one of my favorite places to eat in all of America. It is cheap, it is fresh, and it is crowded. It's a little oyster shack near the water in Panama City, FL called Hunt's. I am a little hesitant to share this gem because it is already crowded approximately 100% of the time. It is a local place, frequented by the residents, slightly off putting to tourists, and therefore a real treat.

You eat raw oysters here. By the dozens. There is a menu with what I am told is a great variety of blackened and fried seafood. There are even things "off menu" like Grouper throat that you simply have to know exist to order. But let's be honest. People come for the cheap, fresh off the boat oysters.

While not as flavorful as it's east and west coast cousins, the Gulf Oyster is a mammoth, and still contains enough sea brine and oceany goodness that it hits straight to the soul (and perhaps other parts, if legend is true). If you have texture issues, try the baked cajun or garlic parmesan. I dare say you won't be disappointed.

Menu:
Plenty of options including kid friendly. Lots of the usual fried and blackened seafood. Plenty of oyster options. Beer on tap.

Food:
As fresh as it comes. Watch'em shuck a dozen right before your eyes. Sides and entrees are also noteworthy.
Atmosphere
A dive. Much beloved by the locals. Always humming. Usually a long wait.

Service:
Typically excellent, even when busy. The speed at which you get your food it astounding sometimes. Friendly and not pushy.
